DDESB approval for Static Detonation Chamber (SDC)

May 23, 2017

Dynasafe is delighted to have received a Department of Defense Explosives Safety Board (DDESB) approval for its Static Detonation Chamber (SDC) at the Blue Grass Army Depot in Richmond, Kentucky. This approval provides the Blue Grass Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant project with the confidence that the Dynasafe SDC will safely and efficiently destroy the stockpile of mustard chemical weapons stockpile at the depot.

“This is an important milestone for Dynasafe and we are proud to earn this important seal of approval from the U.S. Department of Defense,” said Holger Weigel, Dynasafe Chief Operating Officer, “Our demilitarization systems have been deployed worldwide over the last 25 years. This approval provides the ultimate confidence for military professionals that our solutions perform above and beyond conventional standards.”

The SDC utilizes Dynasafe’s advanced explosive containment and thermal destruction technology to process the chemical munitions. The process involves the chemical weapons or munitions being placed in a feed box and then automatically conveyed to the SDC and heated to 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit.  This causes the explosives in the munitions to detonate safely in the chamber, which also destroys the chemical agents and energetics at the same time. Gases generated from the process are contained and treated by an off-gas treatment system that includes a thermal oxidizer, scrubbers and a carbon filter system.

Dynasafe’s eco-friendly process benefits the environment by not producing any wastewater and by recycling the scrap metal from the processed munitions.
